Liebster Award Compromise

So I was recently nominated for a Liebster award, which has me feeling a bit conflicted.

On one hand, these sort of awards remind me waaaaay too much of those Facebook/MySpace notes that cycled around to everyone, and I’m still kind of embarrassed that I took part in those. I also don’t really want to do the “here’s a bunch of things about me” because a) my life is just not that interesting, and b) that’s eating up ideas that I might be able to do a post about. My creativity is limited, people.

But of course, I don’t want to be a jerk by acknowledging it happened and then not passing it on. I also like that it’s a good way to discover new blogs.

So here’s my compromise: a short anecdote and some blogs I like, regardless of size. Ready?

Spring Break, Baby!

Despite the header image (I just used that to pull your eyeballs, muahahahaha), even in college I was never one to go out and party during break. No, no, I had papers to write and exams to study for. It’s indisputably cruel to make projects due just after break but all of my professors did it, as if malignantly denying me one damn week off.

I’d make a giant to do list of everything I’d need to do for all of my classes (and all the reading I’d need to catch up on because I completed the bare minimum required of me) and then promptly veg out into my computer for a week.

But here is where I get some payback. Three times a year, the company I work for has a week long vacation – it’s even paid for people at my level and higher! If I was one level lower, I’d still need to work a second job to make ends meet. If I had a degree, I’d be a salaried employee and thus work during the week would be not technically required but also pretty much necessary.

I have finally hit the spring break sweet spot – I’m staring down ten days of pure, uninterrupted vacation. It’s about damn time!

A Little Holiday

Happy Presidents’ Day, for all my US folks. Hope you had the day off! Seeing as this is the first day off from both jobs that I’ve had in quite some time, I’m spending my time knitting and catching up on Bones and Community. I’ll be back on Friday :)

It’s Movin’ Time!

20130117-171743.jpg

That, friends, is not a stock photo. That was my room as of two days ago. You’re looking at a large chunk of my possessions, broken down and packed up for moving (yes, another move, because life happens sometimes).

While it would be great if I had a buffer of blog posts, scheduled and ready to go so you wouldn’t miss a single post of my scintillating commentary, come on now. This is the first month I’ve even posted regularly and had an inkling of what I was going to write about before the day the post was supposed to go up.

Even that, which started as an organized list with each day correlating to a post and a system of whether it’s been written, edited, or had photos added, has devolved into a list of vague ideas. “Bunny story” and “God I love routines” are actual things on that list.

As I scrambled to pack everything up, try and sell a few things on Craigslist, and found myself anxious about my attempt at a promotion at work, I tried to think of a good topic for this week. I decided that after a crazy week, there’d be nothing better than talking about a few good things that have happened this week (and since it’s a short post, I won’t even make you click the jump to read it. I know, I’m generous.)

  • As mentioned, a promotion I’ve been hoping for has opened up at work. Even better, I had one of my supervisors specifically contact me to tell me it’s available, which I take as a good sign that I’m a solid candidate. (This won’t stop me from being nervous about it, but it’s a start).
  • Since I’m moving this weekend, I’ve been trying to eat up my pantry and fridge. While sometimes annoying, it does mean that my breakfast this morning is hash browns with egg mixed in (like an omelette hash brown. Omelette brown?) with cream cheese on top. Don’t judge me, I’m avoiding food waste, ha!
  • Admittedly, I don’t have past holiday office parties to compare this to, but my company’s belated new year party last night was awesome. We played games for candy and hung out while eating free food and… you know, this sounds a lot less fun than it was. I think it was less the activities than the people involved; I work with some awesome people. It’s pretty telling that as an introvert, usually after an hour or so of hanging out I’m itching to be on my own, but at the end of the night I wasn’t just social but downright hyper.
  • And finally, it makes me smile that just as I was starting to pack up, I got the urge to MAKE ALL THE THINGS . I managed to resist the urge for most of the projects that caught my fancy, but I snuck in a little bedroom revamp and wall art I’ll be telling you about later.

That, folks, is about all the time I have. Wish me luck on my moving weekend, and I’ll be back with a real post on Monday.

Probably.

Maybe.

We’ll see.

Forever Alone Online

Okay internet, you’re letting me down.

I hear all of these stories of people making great friends through blogging, but how does one actually do that?

Hi, Internet Friend. Where can I find you?

I know this must exist. Partially because I doubt that every single person that has talked about this is just lying, but also because I experienced it. Continue reading

Why Write?

This will sound really off topic, but bear with me.

The Geek and I have been making plans for quite awhile to live together again, and also to move to Canada. How those two goals intertwine is constantly changing; who knows what the plan will be tomorrow?

But it does mean that I’ve been looking much more closely at where I spend my time and money, because we’re going to need all the help we can get, and any extra skills or resources I have are going to be good.

Basically, fast food and hours spent reading notalwaysright.com aren’t really going to be helpful here.

The money part hasn’t been too bad. I ditched my iPhone and haven’t had too bad of withdrawals, I use the broken down gym on my apartment complex instead of getting a gym membership, and I’ve started making most of my own meals.

But where I spend my time is a lot, lot harder. Continue reading
